I have never needed to kill a man with my knife, but …..
The story of the birth of the Bowie Knife is a Classic. I sometimes wonder about the origin of the other historic fighting knife, the Arkansas Toothpick, Much simpler in shape, more like a wide double edged dagger. Most serious fighters now carry a skinning knife, and that is my pocket knife, locking blade shaped like a crescent moon, sharpened on the inside edge, mine is only two inches long because in Florida a knife is only considered a deadly weapon if it is over 3.5 inches long in the blade so it can penetrate the heart from the chest. Still a deep cut in the groin, armpit, or throat is effective to extinguish another very quickly. of course only in defense. Still a modern firearm is a good defensive weapon and does not require one to stay in excellent physical condition. It was demonstrative that in this show Jim Bowie did not kill the Creole. In real life he was well known for carrying a knife as big as a sword, one judge called it, and you don’t have reload a knife so especially those huge knives he carried were deadly, to bad we lost him in the Alamo…

Jim Bowie was a great American, of course we lost him and Davy Crockett at the Alamo. You may recall that General Santa Anna was commander of the Mexican troops who ordered the massacre at the Alamo. And that is why I refuse to celebrate “Cinco-De-Mayo” as the fifth of May, is celebrating General Santa Anna coming into power in Mexico. Yep, same guy, later to be our enemy at the Alamo…
